Can Your Passion Support Your Career?

Updated: Dec 14, 2022

It's closing weekend for me and the cast of "Our Town" in Cambria, CA. While this isn't about coaching, leadership, or developing others, in reality, it's about all three as acting is passion and contributes to who I am, how I coach, and how I lead.

I've had the pleasure of being back on stage for the first time since February 2020. It has been easy to forget the joy of working so closely with people to bring art to life. I had forgotten the song my heart sings when I get to play on stage with others and find authenticity in the moments that turn the written word into life here and now.

The play itself has been a meta experience for me. Thorton Wilder's "Our Town" is a look into our daily lives, falling in love, and then the final act of death. It's a deep look at how we miss the specialness of every moment as we move blindly through life, and that it is often only in tragedy that we dare look deeper and see what we've been missing.

As a coach, my connection to the client and the present moment is vital. Being able to hear the heart song of another, to feel the emotions of the moment, and to find truth that inspires, is why I do what I do.

I love the way my passion supports my career.

How do your passions outside of your daily work inspire you and your leadership? Are they in conflict, or have you found a way to create a synergy between them?
