What stands in the way of you showing up as the leader you want to be?
Authenticity is a journey. It takes time and effort to show up as the leader you want to be, that you were meant to be. Which of these items would you want to start working on TODAY?
😱 Fear - Being vulnerable is scary and leaders may be afraid to show their true selves.
A leader I was working with was recently dealing with a major client issue when he pulled the team together and admitted he was out of ideas and had no idea how to proceed. He thought leadership meant having all the answers. The team stepped up and *they* crushed it. Being vulnerable was the key to the team growing and performing beyond his own abilities. (And yes, he gave the team the credit in the retrospective)
🎭 Conformity - Many of us start our leadership journey trying to be like another leader or just trying to live up to some expectation of what a leader is. Some of us even get stuck there.
For years I worked to be "professional" and "business-like" to be taken seriously. Yet it was when I decided to be me; weird, Disney-song-singing, transparent me when I connected to leaders and the teams around me. It was also much easier just being me. I am still professional, I just balance it with authenticity.
🔎 Self-Awareness - Many leaders have never taken the time to understand their values, beliefs, and motivations which makes it difficult to lead authentically.
This goes beyond navel-gazing and some assessments. Have you taken time to self-reflect on the leader you want to be and your unique leadership voice and style? Have you sought feedback from trusted peers and leaders on areas of growth?
Are there other areas I missed?
Which one do you see other leaders deal with the most?
