Beyond promotions and raises, do the little things 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 matter? 5 Ways to show your appreciation.
As a leader, the little things you do matter to your team.
Sure, raises, bonuses, and promotions are important. Of course, they are. BUT don't skimp on recognition and appreciation.
1. Be flexible - This should be a no-brainer at this point. However, as we see pushes to return to working in the office, continue to offer flexibility to show recognition and appreciation of amazing work.
2. Focus on growth - Give stretch assignments, opportunities to learn something new, and cross-discipline partnerships to a team member that keeps knocking it out of the park. Recognizing the current work is great, but are you helping them grow?
3. Connect Often - This goes way beyond the 1:1. Don't let your team member feel invisible or taken for granted. Ask questions. Listen. Stay in the loop. How else will you know what your team member needs?
4. Areas of Improvement - It's easy to just focus on the wonderful work being done, but team members want to know where they can improve as well! This ties into item 2 above. You may not think this would be listed in recognition and appreciation, but exit interviews show that 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 feedback is important to making someone feel valued.
5. Consistency Matters - Make this part of your unique way of leading and watch your team shine. Inconsistency can lead to people feeling you are insincere.
Now go and be an amazing leader!
