How would you rate your communication abilities on a scale of 1 to 10?


This is a question I often ask my clients and, almost to a person over the last 5+ years, they'll rate their conversations as a 7 out of 10.


How did you rate yours?


As leaders, our ability to communicate is a top 10 requirement. Is 7 a good enough number for such an important skill?


No matter what number you gave yourself, how do you know? What objective measurements did you use to justify that number? Is it just a feeling?


Here's my challenge for you.


Ask.


Ask the people on your team in your next 1:1 (you are having 1:1 aren't you?) what is working in the way you communicate. Then follow that up with, "what isn't working?"


If you're not happy with the answers, bring in some help. Talk with a mentor or a coach. Work on this. Don't settle for a 7.
